Check how prepared hair is sitting before taking more off. Comb gently, reassess the outline and leave close scissor work to someone with the right training.

You step back from a nearly finished groom and see a small uneven patch. Reaching straight for the scissors is understandable. First, check whether the hair is sitting as intended. A change in coat position can look like a cutting problem.

This guide is about assessment before finishing. It is not a lesson in using scissors near a dog's face, skin folds or other sensitive areas. Those techniques need practical training and an appropriate, cooperative setup.

Let the coat settle, then look again

Check the dry, prepared coat in good light with the dog standing comfortably where appropriate. Avoid repeatedly repositioning a dog who is becoming tired. Look at the outline from more than one sensible angle, and distinguish the planned shape from the way a section happens to be lying.

Use a suitable comb gently in the direction needed for the trained finishing technique. If the comb catches, stop and address the preparation issue appropriately. Pulling hard to make the hair stand differently does not make the assessment more accurate.

Hair lying differently: reassess its position before deciding to remove more.
A preparation gap: work out why the coat is catching instead of hiding it under a neater surface.

Use the comb's spacing deliberately

Coarse and fine sections provide different spacing; neither is permission to force through resistance. Choose the comb for the coat and stage of work. Check its teeth and spine before use, and keep it clean according to its care instructions. A bent or damaged tooth should not be part of a finishing routine.
